Time for another silly comic!  Previous sketchblog entries can be viewed (at own risk) at http://danieljhogan.livejournal.com/tag/sketchblog+2008

Here is today's:

I actually came up with this idea a couple of weeks ago, but in my attempt to get better at time management while working on writing stuff under a deadline, I put this on the back burner until after I was done writing/editing A Queen's Tale (see previous post).  Today's adventure is based on the internet darling known as 'the lolrus,'. Click here for more lolrus nonsense. However, mine is the zolrus--a zombie lolrus.  Kind of a spoiler I guess, but what ev.

I'm happy with how this one turned out, other than realizing that it is too small.  I like what i did with the layout and the 'shadow' effect in the last panel.  as much as I like doing hand drawn panels, i think I'll stick with using the shape tool in Flash from now on, I do like the crisp look of the frames and it contrasts against my drawing style nicely.  Speaking of drawing style, I like the look of this character, mainly the eyes. I may stick with this style for the time (well, I'll have to until I get this story done).  You probably can't tell, but one of his feet is stuck in a bucket in the last panel. The funny thing is that originally he looked different in the first three panels but I loved the drawing in last panel so I redid rest to match that style.

And yes, "SCHLUMP" is the sound of getting your foot stuck in a bucket.

Another wacky, nonsensical comic strip by yours truly. Based (LOOSELY) on actual events.

Won't say which restaurant this happened at, and there were more friends around for this but I didn't feel like drawing more people--and I thought the joke worked better with only two. I actually did say "make a wish!" to a friend who found a hair in their water. I thought it was funny. I just realized the text in panel two isn't lined up with panel one. Oops. One of these I'll get back to doing word balloons.

Got some writing done on the fairy tale story, I'm over 3,000 words now. Might try and get some more done before I call it a night. Doesn't help I'm losing an hour either (in the words of Homer Simpson, "Lousy famers...").

Sang a lot at Rock Band last night and because of that my throat is rather sore today. I did pretty good though, it helped that I had a kickin' band backin' me up too.

This week's sketch is in honor of Roy "SeaQuest"  Scheider's recent passing. He will be missed. Do yourself a favor and watch French Connection instead of the usual pouring of a 40 on the curb. I used this clip as a reference for drawing the frames. I did screen captures and put them under the layer I was drawing on in Flash so I could get things to line up right and try to recreate the frame from the movie. This was fun, and a new challenge for me.

I traced the backgrounds and the outline of the frames (wanted to maintain the film's aspect ratio). I obviously didn't trace the actors, I didn't really want to do that. I'm not too happy with how the text turned out, but I still had fun. I was going to use the shape tool to make the frames have straight lines but I like uneven look of the hand drawn frames. Overall I'm happy with how this turned out.

My epic series of sketches (finally) comes to an end. This means I get to draw something else now, huzzah. Here is Parte the First and Parte the Seconde. All other sketches can be found here: http://danieljhogan.livejournal.com/tag/sketchblog+2008

This was a long one (That's what she said. Stop it. Sorry). My original plan wasn't to put it behind a cut, but I changed my mind (non Livejournal readers, ignore this). If I had decided to do this earlier, the layout would have been wider and not as cramped. Oh well. I actually used panels a bit in this one. Mostly to mimick the look of a Sergio Leone movie. This was fun and I was pushing myself once again, which is the whole point of doing these weekly sketches.

Last part is here. Other sketchblog posts can be viewed here.

Here is a sample (a joke I thought of last week and kind of inspired this week's sketch set up).

I had fun with this one.

I censored panel seven mainly because I find implied/covered up swearing funnier than actual swearing. The next sketch will continue the story, promise.

In other news, I sent out my copies of The Magic of Eyri to the City Pulse, Larry Elmore and Jeff Smith today. I'm very nervous about seeing what comes from this, but I'm glad I did it (mentioned here if you want to be brought up to speed). I also played Rock Band for the first time on Saturday. Oh my, was that a fun time. I played the drums mostly and had a blast. I was getting pretty good at it by the end of the night (although on the Easy setting). It was one of the best multiplayer games I've ever played - lots of fun.
