23rd-Jan-2009 07:48 pm - The Good, The Bad and The Grumpy

I had dinner with my uncle at Gone Wired Cafe last night (he read my letter to the editor piece on the place and wanted to try their pizza), and after I was home for a bit I kept thinking "There was something I was s'pose to do tonight..." Mid-way through a post-dinner nap, I woke up and remembered: Jim C. HInes [info]jimhines had a book signing at Schuler Books in Eastwood Towne Center! Thankfully, I remembered in time and got their in time to chat with Jim and to pick up a (signed) copy of his latest book, THE STEPSISTER SCHEME (book one of THE PRINCESS SERIES).  Think fairy tales meets Charlie's Angels.

Having just finshed the latest volume of the comic FABLES, I'm eager to read Jim's take on classic fairy tales--turning Snow White and others into action heroes.  I skimmed the first few pages in line and was laughing in no time.  That reminds me, I still have a copy of GOBLIN QUEST I need to read. D'oh.  I've been so bad about reading lately--other than comics that is.  I'm sure STEPSISTER SCHEME will get me back into my usual reading pace.

[info]wookiee71 was also on hand, and we chatted about him getting some comic book work thrown his way, which is great.</lj></lj>

It was great to talk to Jim, as always, and part of me regrets I won't be at ConFusion this weekend. Oh well.  I need to save the money, as I want to go to Penguicon in May and possibily the Kalamazoo Animation Festival International which is two weeks after that.

After the signing, I walked over to the movie theater to see if I could catch a 9 PM show of something (I figured, I was there--why not?) I ended up seeing GRAN TORINO. I liked the film, mainly because it was (unintentionally) hilarious and that they filmed around Detroit and Grosse Pointe--I recognized some of the locations too.  I gotta admit, I felt a lot of pride when I saw the "FILMED IN MICHIGAN" tag in the credits.

Watching Eastwood be grumpy for 2 hours was all kinds of amusing to me.  Some of his (non-racist) mannerisms reminded me of my own dad, especially the scenes when he his teaching the neighbor kid to 'talk' and 'act' like a man.  The plot was predictible, especially the ending.  But most dramas are, that's just how it goes.  Parts of it reminded me of BOYZ N THE HOOD, mainly the theme of strong male role models being important for young, troubled boys.

So if you're  fan of seeing Eastwood pissed off and sneering, check it out. There are a few classic Eastwood scenes in the film. It probably isn't worth rushing out to see in the theatre, but is is a pretty good film.

Although, listening to Eastwood sing his "Gran Torino" song over the end credits was a little weird.

3rd-Oct-2008 10:27 am - ConClave Awaits!
Today starts the weekend long fan convention known as ConClave.  I'll be there as a guest author and on seven different panels, ranging in topics from Online Publishing to Humor in Sci-Fi and Fantasy.  It'll be a hoot.  You can see which panels I'm on by reading this post. So if you're in the Detroit area, swing on by.  I will also have copies of The Magic of Eyri for sale, for a reduced price too.

And keep an eye on my Twitter page.  I'm going to try and use that to keep track of what's going on (I can update it via text messaging, neato).

Eagles Live in Eyries
I attended the "Go Local" event at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial yesterday to sell/sign copies of The Magic of Eyri--and I sold all my copies!

I brought six copies with me and thankfully I didn't have to take any of them home.  I usually only bring around five copies to something like that (selling around five copies tends to be my average, which is pretty good actually), but I'm glad I had the number of copies I did--one very nice lady bought four copies at once (for grandkids and such), which was amazing.

I could have brought four additional copies, but I wanted to keep those in reserve to sell at ConClave next month. As part of my Get Out of Book-Related Debt By The End of the Year Plan, I'm trying not to have to order any new books before ConClave.  I also won't be ordering the ever popular mini-pins again any time soon. I know four copies may not seem like a lot, but as I said I usually only sell around five copies and I'll be on a bunch of panels, so I don't know how much time I'll have for selling anyway.  And I'm not staying at the hotel (another cost saving measure), so I'll have to carry stuff with me at all times and I won't be there all day and night.

We'll see. This could change and I'll end up getting a couple more copies, but we'll see.

In other good news, it looks like I sold another copy of The Magic of Eyri on Lulu.com last week (give or take).  So I've sold seven copies in the past few weeks.  That's pretty great.  As of today I've sold 134 copies of the book and have 217 copies in print ( includes freebies and donations).

Now the bad news
--I got a pair of rejections last week for my short stories Slow and Steady and A Queen's Tale.  Oh well.  I'll dig through my copy of Writer's Market '07 and find new places to try.  Slow and Steady will be a bit easier because it is shorter (under 4,000 words I think), I'll have a hard time finding a magazine willing to take the 10,000+ word A Queen's Tale. I'll get back on the horse and try again.

No Ghost
I was playing Smarty Pants (a trivia game for the Wii) at a party this weekend when a question about author Elizabeth Bear popped up--I was on a panel* with her at Penguicon this past April, how funny is that?  It took me a couple seconds to realize who the the question was referring to "Why do I know that name?...WAIT."

Signing This Weekend: I'm selling and signing copies of The Magic of Eyri (for a reduced price) at the "Go Local" event at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial on Sunday (noon to 5PM).  I'm sharing a table with my mom--she's selling Two Sisters Gourmet stuff (spices, seasonings, other yummy stuff). I believe there is a $3 donation to get into the event.  There will be a lot of other stuff there too.
