9th-Dec-2009 03:04 pm - Received Goods 9dec09

Issue eight of YETI magazine arrived today. I noticed it because it has a Zola Jesus interview, and I am fond of Nika and her noises. But it’s a monstrous 200-page thing packed with all kinds of interesting stuff. Also, an eighty-minute CD full of rare/unreleased music by shitloads of people. Here’s Yeti’s site, with the information you want. It’s USD $11.95, or USD $19.95 if, like me, you’re ordering from outside the USA. For the amount of content here, that’s really bloody cheap.

Oh, and I got this last week., but I want to mention it: Julianna Barwick’s sublime FLORINE, previously only available as an mp3 EP from eMusic, is now available as a CD. This was one of my very favourite discoveries of 2009, and I’m so glad to now have a physical copy to hand. Julianna’s mailing these out herself, and mine arrived with a nice little note on the back of the envelope.

Kid Test Labs Review Draw Star Wars: Clone Wars

This video MADE MY YEAR! The parents and kids at Kid Test Labs shot a video reviewing my new book (illustrated by Grant Gould) Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars published by Klutz Books. The video interviews various kids as they attempt to draw everything from General Grievous to battle droids using the tutorials and tracing pages.

Seriously, how cool is it that actual kids went through my book with their parents to show them how to use it, and why the tutorials improved their drawing skills!? I'm very flattered they took the time to test out the book from cover to cover, and their suggestions and thoughts really meant a lot to me.

I especially liked that one kid decided to draw a fairy princess General Grievous, complete with gnomes! Most impressive!

Thanks young Padawans!

9th-Dec-2009 01:45 pm - my christmas letter to joe biden
Sending Joe a present today for being the best VP ever.

Once upon a time, someone starting a new publishing house would either have a personal fortune or would seek large private investors. Crowdsourced fundraising allows the masses to chip in for projects they believe in.

Tu Publishing is one that I’m excited about. Tu Publishing is a small, independent multicultural SFF press for children and YA and they are raising money for startup costs right now. I’ve had the opportunity to correspond with Stacy Whitman in my role as SFWA secretary and she’s sharp, knows the industry and is passionate about YA and SF.

The catch is that the fundraiser only has four more days to go and they only have 40% of their total.

Fantasy and science fiction, mystery and historical fiction–these genres draw in readers like no other. Yet it is in these genres that readers of color might feel most like an outsider, given that such a large percentage features white characters (when they feature human characters). It is the goal of Tu Publishing to publish genre books for children and young adults that fill this gap in the market–and more importantly, this gap in serving our readers. By focusing on multicultural settings and characters in fantastic stories, we also open up worlds to all readers.

Now, given my history with fundraisers, I want to let you know that Kickstarter rocks. It’s a very solid platform. I’ve talked to the developers and experimented with donations on the site. It’s beautifully done.

Please consider donating to get Tu Publishing off the ground.
